Car Insurance Guide - by moneysupermarket.com
With the exception of savings or bank accounts, car insurance is probably the most widespread monetary product in the UK today; this is due to car insurance being a legal requirement for every active vehicle in the UK.

75% of the UK's residents own one or more cars which results in the number of live policies running into the millions and with policies differing a lot; you would think the UK would be experts when obtaining the best cover for the cheapest price.

There are an increasing amount of people in the UK who are paying way too much on their car insurance due to them having the wrong insurance or actually have void cover without knowing.

Which insurance?
This really depends on your circumstances, how often do you drive your car, how much is your car worth or where do you park your car? All these factors determine the type and price of your cover, some more than others.
There are three types of cover available and depending on your situation, your cover and price will vary quite a lot.

Third party - this is the lowest possible cover you can get for your car but it is also the cheapest. In the event of an accident, only third parties will be covered by your insurance, neither you or your vehicle will be covered if the accident is your fault. Third party cover is recommended if you own a vehicle worth less than £1000.

Third party fire and theft - this is similar to standard fire and theft but as the name suggests, it covers your vehicle if it is stolen or damaged in an attempted robbery or if your vehicle is damaged in a fire or explosion. If you purchase a vehicle brand new and it is stolen within a year then your vehicle will be replaced if stolen. This cover tends to be a little higher in price than standard third party cover due to the extra benefits.

Fully comprehensive - this is the most popular cover as it covers a full range of factors if you were to make a claim. It covers anyone and their vehicles involved in an accident if it was your fault and also covers your vehicle in the event of an accident regardless of who is to blame. Fully comprehensive cover can also enable you to drive other vehicles but only if you have permission from the owner, do not own the car and drive it within the UK. Fully comprehensive cover is recommended if you own an expensive vehicle.

If you live with your parents and do not need the use of a car often then you should consider becoming a named driver with them on their policy, obviously with their consent. You will pay a fraction of the normal insurance cost for the same cover and in some cases you can build a no claims record. You should be aware that driving the car all the time as if it was your own when you are only down as a named driver will void your policy; nothing will be paid out if you have an accident.

By choosing the correct cover suited to your situation, you could end up saving hundreds of pounds, maybe thousands on your car insurance.
